Walsh sends Bears to playoffs, sets goals record

BROCKPORT, N.Y.— Graduate student midfielder Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) scored in overtime to give the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (9-5, 4-3 SUNYAC) an 11-10 victory over SUNY Brockport (4-11, 2-6) on Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Bears the fourth seed in next week's SUNYAC Playoffs.

With his three goals today, Peyton Walsh is the new Potsdam career goals leader with 137, eclipsing Hall of Famer Joe Schoener '85. Junior attackman Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) also had three goals and junior midfielder Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) and junior attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) each had two goals and an assist. Sophomore goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Akwesasne, N.Y.) had another outstanding day with 17 saves, including two in the extra session.

The Golden Eagles built a 3-1 lead through the contest's first 6:40. Carson Colucci opened the scoring at 13:36. Rose got Potsdam even just 47 seconds later. However, Nick Askin got the next two for the hosts. Owen Walsh closed the gap to 3-2 at 5:37.

Marc Zappula regained the two-goal lead for Brockport at 13:41 of the second quarter, but the Bears offense got rolling minutes later. Potsdam closed the half on a 6-0 run for an 8-4 halftime lead. Junior attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) scored at 10:07 on a feed from Peyton Walsh. Owen Walsh scored at 9:10 to tie the game. At 8:03, Peyton scored to establish a new program goals mark with the 135th of his career. Owen made it 6-4 at 6:05. Cree scored a man-up with a helper from Rose at 2:24 and Rose scored his second at 1:34 and the Bears led 8-4 at the break.

The Golden Eagles roared back with a 6-0 run of their own to start the third quarter. Askin scored four of the goals and Ben Hay had the other two and it was 10-8 at 2:02. Peyton Walsh ended the run with 18 seconds left in the third with a helper from sophomore midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and it was a one-goal contest after 45 minutes.

The Bears outshot Brockport 11-9 in the fourth quarter. Thompson stopped four shots and Golden Eagles goalie Jack Acker made two saves. There was only one goal scored in the final 15 minutes of regulation. It was Gould netting a man-up goal with an assist from Cree to tie the contest.

Walsh scored his 137th career goal with 2:01 left in overtime to send the Bears to the postseason.

Askin led the Golden Eagles with six goals and an assist. Hay finished with two goals. Acker had the 12 saves, playing well in the loss.
Peyton Walsh also had an assist on the day. The four-point performance gives him 188 for his career, moving him into sole possession of third place on the program scoring list. He needs four more points to catch Hall of Famer Brian Austin '01. Schoener is the all-time leader with 236 points.

The Bears will now travel to top seeded SUNY Cortland for the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday.
