Wildcats rally past Bears in NEVC Quarters, Tenhagen has record night

UTICA, N.Y.—The fifth-seeded SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (17-13) went up 2-0 on fourth-seeded SUNY Poly (13-15) before falling 3-2 in the NEVC Quarterfinals. Sophomore outside hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) led the Bears with a program record 29 kills along with 19 digs and two aces.
 
The Bears took set one 25-21 and were on the brink of advancing after a 25-15 win in set two. However, the host Wilcats rallied for 25-21, 25-21 and 15-7 decisions to clinch the victory. Junior outside hitter Matt Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had nine kills and three aces. Graduate student opposite Zaire Rogers (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) finished with six kills, 12 digs and an ace. Senior middle hitter Sean Murray (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) had five blocks to set the program record with 150 for his career. Freshman setter Alex Lombardo (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) had a personal best 27 assists and senior captain Michael Anderson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) added 18 more. Senior libero Tom Shemik (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) had 10 digs.
 
Peter Gottler paced SUNY Poly with 17 kills, five aces and eight digs. Jason Aubrey had 15 kills, two blocks and an ace. James Mion recorded 10 kills and seven blocks. Joshua Slater had a match-best 47 assists and Thomas McNulty posted 22 digs.
 
The contest marks the close of the careers of seniors Anderson, Sam Day (Phelps, N.Y./Midlakes), Cam McGarry (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa), Murray, Rogers and Shemik.
 
The season, Potsdam matched the program single-season record with 17 wins and established a new mark for winning percentage with .567.
