Red Dragons sweep Bears

CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (23-7, 13-3 SUNYAC) swept the SUNY Potsdam softball team (13-19, 4-12) by identical 8-0 scores on Friday afternoon.
 
In game one, the Red Dragons scored one in the first inning, four in the third in the fourth for the 8-0 win. Junior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (6-9) allowed eight runs, four earned, on eight hits and two walks, while striking out two. Freshman Hannah Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) struck out one in two thirds of an inning. Junior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) and senior third baseman Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) had the Bears' two hits.
 
McKenna Barry (14-2) scattered the two hits and struck out two for Cortland in the five innings. Shortstop Shannon Scotto was 3-for-3 with a run and four RBI. Centerfielder Gina Meyers was 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.
 

Game two unfolded differently, but ended with the same result. Cortland scored two in the second, five in the fourth and one in the fifth. Senior pitcher Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) (3-6) allowed seven runs on three hits and four walks in 3.2 innings. Graduate student Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) allowed a run on three hits in an inning. Dobransky had the Bears' lone hit in the contest.
 
Kim Westenberg (9-3) struck out nine Bears and allowed the one hit in five innings. Left fielder Halle Wright was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a walk. Catcher Julz Koch was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI. Pinch hitter Gabby Baumann drove in three runs with a double in her only at-bat.
 
The Bears wrap up conference play tomorrow when they head to Oswego State for noon and 2 p.m. contests.
