Bears rally past Cardinals for season’s first win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (1-1) lost the first set to host SUNY Plattsburgh before rattling off three straight set victories for a 3-1 match win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A service ace from Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) gave the Bears a 5-4 lead in set one, but the Cardinals answered and slowly pulled away for a 25-18 win.
  • Set two saw six lead changes and seven ties, but two sizable Bears' runs, including the last five points in-a-row, carried the Bears to a 25-20 win. Junior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) started the final run with a kill.
  • Another Layer kill broke a 16-16 tie and ignited a 9-4 finish to the 25-20 set three Potsdam victory.
  • After a 4-4 tie to set four, the Bears finished on a 21-3 tear to capture the match with a 25-11 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Senior opposite Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) led the Bears with 13 kills and nine digs.
  • Henry finished with 10 kills, 21 digs and four aces.
  • Layer had six kills 13 assists, eight digs and two aces.
  •  Graduate student middle hitter Lexi Price (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) contributed three blocks, while sophomore setter Gabriella Luna (Schenectady, N.Y./Mekeel Christian Academy) added nine assists and freshman setter Meredith Harnden (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) had six.
  • The Bears then finished their weekend with an exhibition match with Division II Saint Michael's. Full stats at the link above.
     
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears travel to the Cobleskill Homecoming Classic for three matches next weekend. They take on Smith College on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday they face the host Fighting Tigers at noon and Elmira College at 2 p.m.
