FREDONIA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (2-8, 2-2 SUNYAC) built a first half lead at SUNY Fredonia (4-8, 2-3) before the Blue Devils surged back in the second half for a 93-79 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears used hot shooting from a balanced offense to open up a 14-7 lead over the Blue Devils through the first 12:26. Fredonia answered with an 8-1 stretch to tie the game at 15 at 10:26.
- Sophomore guard Erik Wall (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) and senior guard Walter deFrietas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) answered with back-to-back threes, but another surge by Fredonia saw the teams even at 30-30 with 3:14 left in the half.
- The Bears finished the half on a 10-4 run, nine points coming on three 3-pointers from senior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown), and led 40-34 at the break.
- Kelly scored 20 points for Potsdam in the first half.
- A three from sophomore guard Mohommad Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Darrow) gave the Bears a 51-44 advantage two minutes into the second half.
- Fredonia then caught fire, outscoring the Bears 34-11 over the next 13 minutes. The Blue Devils led 78-62 with 5:25 left.
- The teams exchanged buckets for the rest of the contest and Potsdam wasn't able to gain ground as time ran out.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fredonia shot a scorching 51.6-percent from the floor, while holding the Bears to 43.3.
- The Blue Devils had a 38-33 edge on the glass.
- Kelly finished with 22 points.
- Sophomore guard Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, N.Y./La Salle Academy) scored 17 points and recorded eight assists and six rebounds.
- Sylla and Wall each finished with nine points. Sylla also contributed five assists.
- Brandon Kulakowski led all scorers with 27 points and nine rebounds for Fredonia.
- Kai Woods also had 17 points and six rebounds for the Blue Devils.
