Bears shut out Clarkson in season finale

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-11-1) ended a long skid with a 2-0 victory over Clarkson University (6-5-4) in its season finale on Tuesday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore forward Thomas Wendel (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) opened the scoring at 17:49 with a long blast off a feed from fellow sophomore forward Jayson Viola (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison).
  • At 86:32, freshman forward Andres Arce (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) stole the ball from a Golden Knight defender and beat Clarkson senior keeper Josh Morelli (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) to give Potsdam an insurance marker.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Clarkson edged Potsdam in shots 14-13 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Bears senior goalie Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) stopped two shots for his fifth win of the season, eighth of his career and second shutout.
  • Morelli made four saves for the Golden Knights.
  • Arce's goal was the first of his collegiate career. Wendel's tally was his fifth of the season and sixth as a Bear.
  • The victory was the Bears' first against Clarkson since 2017 and the 11th in the series history.
