Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Bears complete weekend sweep of Fredonia, 4-3

FREDONIA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (2-0) never trailed in a tight 4-3 nonconference victory at SUNY Fredonia (0-2) on Saturday afternoon. Four different Bears scored in the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior captain Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) opened the scoring at 6:58 of the second period with assists from freshman forward Platon Krasnoiarov (Khabarovsk, Russia/New Hampshire Mountain Kings) and sophomore defenseman Lucas Salas (Hazlet, N.J./New Jersey 87's).
  • Senior forward Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) scored a power-play goal at 9:50 of the second period to make it 2-0. Senior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) and sophomore forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) picked up the assists.
  • The Blue Devils got on the board at 17:28 of the second period with a goal from Mathieu Fournier and an assist from Cash Anderson.
  • Fournier then tied the game on the man advantage just 1:19 into the third period with a helper from Ethan Pitzman.
  • Parent then set up senior forward Payton Felix (De Peyster, N.Y./Northeast Generals) to give Potsdam a 3-2 lead at 5:49.
  • Pitzman scored on the power play at 15:14 to get Fredonia even a final time. Xavier Fortin assisted on the goal.
  • At 17:13 while on the power play, senior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) netted his third goal of the weekend and his second game-winner in as many days to close the scoring at 4-3. Salas and senior captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) assisted on the goal.

  • Fredonia outshot the Bears 32-25.
  • Fredonia was 2-for-4 on the power play and Potsdam was 2-for-3.
  • Bears junior goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) stopped 29 shots for his 11th career win.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears head to Elmira College on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest. On Saturday, they travel to Nazareth University to battle the Golden Flyers at 3 p.m.
