POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (3-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) scored first and then kept battling after falling behind to No. 1 Hobart College (7-0, 3-0) before bowing 6-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears struck first at 3:39 of the first period. Senior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) knocked home a rebound off a shot from junior forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals). Junior defenseman Samuel De Mauro (Montreal, Quebec/Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) had the second assist.
- Hobart responded just 39 seconds later. Senior forward Kahlil Fontana (Duncan, British Columbia/Coquitlam Express) tied the game with an assist from freshman Tommy McDonough (Madbury, N.H./New Hampshire Mountain Kings).
- The Statesmen took the lead for good with a power-play goal at 5:47. Sophomore forward Easton Ryan (Nepean, Ontario/Merrit Centennials) finished a pass from sophomore forward Adam Mendelson (Montreal, Quebec/Powell River). Sophomore defenseman Calum Chau (Oakville, Ontario/Collingwood Blues) earned the second assist.
- At 15:08, senior forward Tanner Daniels (Edinboro, Pa./Lone Star Brahmas) scored from the slot off a pass from sophomore forward Arvega Hovsepyan (Los Angeles, Calif./Salve Regina) in the left corner. Fontana started the play and had the second assist.
- The Statesmen netted their fourth goal at 3:35 of the second period. Junior forward Brandon Sacchetti (Montreal, Quebec/Jersey Hitmen) sent a pass to junior defensemen Conor Lally (Scarborough, Maine/Boston Advantage) at the right point. Lally let a wrister go that Bears junior goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) never saw. Junior defenseman Bauer Swift (West Hartford, Conn./UCONN) earned the second assist.
- The Bears took advantage of a power play at 8:00 of the second. Senior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) tipped a shot from junior defenseman Rocco Seery (Bloomingdale, Ill./East Coast Wizards) into the top of the net.
- Hobart responded 1:59 later as sophomore defenseman Nick Dimatos (Princeton, N.J./Utica Comets) went the length of the ice himself and tucked the puck into the net.
- Lally buried his second at 14:45 to make it 6-2 with assists from Chau and Fontana.
- Senior forward Max Klanow (Holly, Mich./Hawkesbury Hawks) knocked home a Quesnel rebound to get Potsdam within 6-3 at 15:02 of the second period. Parent had the other assist.
- Three minutes into the third period, Mahlmeister was hauled down. Bears head coach Mike Grace chose the penalty shot over a power play and Mahlmeister capitalized to close the gap to two goals.
- With about three minutes to go, Grace pulled sophomore goalie Luciano Chinappi (Hilton, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) for a Bears extra attacker, but Potsdam couldn't get any closer.
