POTSDAM, N.Y.—On the final day of the season, the SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (9-18) defeated SUNY Canton (8-21) 3-2 and fell to St. Lawrence University (17-11) 3-2 in a doubleheader in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED (CANTON)
- Canton pulled away in the middle of set one and held on for a 25-18 win. Junior outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) had all four of the Bears' kills.
- Potsdam rallied to take set two 25-23. Hagerman had five more kills and junior outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) added four.
- The Bears slowly gained the upper hand in and took set three 25-19. Junior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) registered four kills and freshman outside hitter Logan Georgia Owego, N.Y./Owego) had two.
- Canton rebounded to take set four 25-17. Redeye, Hagerman and Georgia each posted three kills.
- The Bears fell behind 13-10 in the fifth set, but used a 5-0 run to take the set and the match. Prest had three more kills, including the match point, and Hagerman chipped in two more.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (CANTON)
- Hagerman had match-highs in both kills (12) and digs (19). Prest finished with 11 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Redeye totaled nine kills.
- Georgia recorded seven blocks and five kills.
- Senior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) had 32 assists and three aces.
- Junior setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) contributed 18 digs and two aces.
- Junior outside hitter Sarah Ruffos (Parish, N.Y./Altmar-Parish-Williamstown) had two blocks and junior setter Gabriella Luna (Schenectady, N.Y./Mekeel Christian Academy) added two aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED (SLU)
- The Bears raced out to an 18-13 lead before taking set 1, 25-18. Prest had six kills and Hagerman recorded five.
- It was more of the same in set two, with Potsdam hanging on to take a 26-24 win. Prest and Redeye each had four kills and Georgia had two.
- The Saints built a big lead in set three and held off the Bears for a 25-19 win. Hagerman had three kills and Redeye and Layer each had two.
- SLU took set four 25-17 to even the match. Hagerman had three more kills and Georgia and Prest had two apiece.
- The Saints opened up an 8-0 lead in set five. The Bears battled back to within 14-13 before falling 15-13. Prest had three kills and Hagerman had two.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (SLU)
- Prest closed her Bears career with 18 kills, 21 digs and three aces. Hagerman had 14 kills and 15 digs. Redeye finished with eight kills and five blocks.
- Layer added another 36 kills and 11 digs in her final match.
- Madore had 15 digs and freshman Carli Knapp (Lovington, N.M./Lovington) added two aces.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to the Canton match, the Bears honored seniors Layer, Prest (graduating early) and junior Madison Gilliand (Rossville, Ga./Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe) for their Potsdam careers.
