POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (8-11-4, 6-5-1 SUNYAC) scored three times in the third period to defeat SUNY Fredonia (7-16, 5-7) 4-2 on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams battled through a scoreless first period with the Blue Devils edging the Bears 13-12 in shots.
- Fredonia got on the board first at 9:40 of the second period as freshman forward Gavin Bloder (Chesterfield, N.J./Trinity-Pawling) jammed home a rebound. Freshman forward Nolan Ring (South Porcupine, Ontario/O'Gorman) and junior defenseman Garrison Gagnon (Plymouth, N.H./Holderness School) had the assists.
- Junior forward Max Klanow (Holly, Mich./Hawkesbury Hawks) tied the game at 14:41 with assists from junior forwards Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) and Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawkes).
- Sophomore forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) gave the Bears the lead with a power-play goal at 5:50 of the third period. Junior assistant captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) and junior forward Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) picked up the assists.
- Fredonia got even at 10:56 as graduate student forward David Sudbrink (Nolensville, Tenn./K12 International Academy) knocked home a loose puck. Freshman forward Sam Chrenka (Beroun, Czech Republic/Joachima Barranda) and Bloder had the assists.
- At 17:53, sophomore defenseman Rocco Seery (Bloomingdale, N.Y./East Coast Wizards) stopped a Fredonia clearing attempt and found freshman forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) all alone in front of the net. He deposited the eventual game-winner in the left side of the goal.
- Fredonia then pulled junior goalie Charles-Anthony Barbeau (St. Remi, Quebec/College Bourget) for an extra attacker.
- Senior captain Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets) sealed the win with an empty net goal at 18:19.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Bears outshot the Blue Devils 37-35.
- Potsdam was 1-for-4 on the man advantage and Fredonia went 1-for-2.
- Two-time reigning SUNYAC Goalie of the Week, senior John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) was strong again, stopping 33 shots.
- Barbeau also made 33 saves.
- The Bears stay tied for fourth place with SUNY Canton. Plattsburgh leaps the Blue Devils into sixth place.
