POTSDAM, N.Y.—They SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (5-13-4, 1-12-4) scored three goals in a two-minute span, but Buffalo State (6-16-2, 2-13-2) rallied to forge a 3-3 tie on Bear Pride Night.
HOW IT HAPPPENED
- Buffalo State outshot Potsdam 14-12 in the first period. The Bears were 0-for-2 on the power play and the Bengals went 0-for-1 in the scoreless 20 minutes.
- Buffalo State took a 1-0 lead at 4:40 of the second period. Senior forward Carys Ursell (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Fire) scored on a shot from the right point that beat a screened Bears freshman goalie Maddy Ferguson (Medicine Hat, Alberta/South Alberta Hockey Academy).
- Potsdam answered with three goals in a 2:10 span.
- Sophomore forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) tied the game at 12:12 with an assist from junior forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles).
- Just 1:02 later, freshman forward Olivia Visco (West Seneca, N.Y./Nichols School) gave the Bears the lead with her first collegiate goal. Graduate student forward Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) had the assist for the 91st point of her career.
- At 14:22, Castro struck again with assists from junior forward Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) and freshman defenseman Ryanne Rathburn (North Syracuse, N.Y./Hoosac School). It was Rathburn's first career point.
- Sophomore forward Liz Flores (Colleyville, Texas/Dallas Stars Elite) finished a long pass from Ursell at the left post to make it 3-2 at 5:24 of the third period. Freshman forward Mikala Gould (Redwood, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) started the play with a long pass to Ursell.
- Ursell picked off a Bears clearing attempt at 15:55 of the third and wristed it into the top of the net to tie the score at 3-3.
- In overtime, the Bengals outshot the Bears 4-3 with both Ferguson and Buffalo State senior goalie Jessica Auge (Laingsburg, Mich./Honeybaked Detroit) making big stops to preserve the draw.
- The Bears won the exhibition shootout 1-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Potsdam outshot the Bengals 32-30.
- The Bears finished 0-for-4 on the power play and Buffalo State went 0-for-2.
