POTSDAM, N.Y.—A second half jumper made senior forward
Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) the 23rd player in SUNY Potsdam men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. The basket helped the Bears (6-18, 6-11 SUNYAC) edge SUNY Fredonia (6-18, 4-13) 95-92 on Bear Pride Night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- No more than a few points separated the two teams for much of the first half. However, the Blue Devils were able to build a nine-point lead late.
- A push by the Bears in the final minutes saw them trail only 47-42 at the break.
- A layup from Kelly at 17:44 got Potsdam even at 49-49 in the second half.
- A tip-in from junior guard Khalil Screen (Providence, R.I./Classical) at 5:35 gave the Bears their biggest lead of the contest at 82-73.
- Fredonia whittled the deficit down in the last seconds, closing the contest with a three at the buzzer to get within 95-92.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Bears were red hot from the floor, outshooting the Blue Devils 50-percent to 45.5.
- They also controlled the glass 39-35.
- Sophomore forward Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, N.Y./Darrow) had 20 points and eight rebounds.
- Sophomore guard Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, N.Y./La Salle Academy) also scored 20 points to go with seven assists and five boards.
- Parker had 16 points to give him 1,001 for his career.
- Freshman guard Mike Hancock (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) added 11 points.
- Senior guard Brandon Kulakowski (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) lead all scorers with an impressive 35 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.
