Cardinals rally past Potsdam in SUNYAC First Round

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (8-14-4) scored three times in the first period, but Plattsburgh State (15-10-1) scored four times in the third for a 5-3 Cardinals win in the SUNYAC Tournament first round.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Graduate student assistant captain Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) opened the scoring at 6:33 of the first period with an assist from junior forward Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals).
  • At 11:56, junior forward Jeremy Quenel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawks) doubled the lead with an assist from junior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves).
  • With just 1:02 left in the first, sophomore defenseman Rocco Seery (Bloomingdale, Ill./East Coast Wizards) scored an unassisted goal to send the Bears into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.
  • Potsdam was called for a penalty early in the second and Lonan Bulger scored on the power play at 5:30. Kevin Weaver-Vitale and Shane Bondy had the assists.
  • Plattsburgh got within 3-2 at 4:52 of the third period on a goal from Brody Spence-Ha. Jake Sacratini and Bulger assisted on the goal.
  • Bulger knotted the score at 7:40 with helpers from Jagger Benson and Colin Callanan.
  • Patrick Cole gave the Cardinals the lead for good at 14:18. Blake Hall and Spencer Bellina had the assists.
  • The Bears pulled senior goalie John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) twice in the final minutes, but Sacratini scored an empty-net goal with 42.2 seconds left.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Plattsburgh outshot Potsdam 35-23 on the night.
  • The Cardinals were 1-for-5 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-3,
  • Weber finished with 30 saves.
  • Jacob Herne stopped 20 shots for the win.
 
The contest marks the close of the careers of Bears seniors Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets), Werber and Andrew Lantry (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) and graduate student Loran.
 
Werber finished the season with Potsdam records for goals-against-average (2.06) and save percentage (.938).
