Golden Knights overpower Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (7-3) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-2) 19-7 on a damp cold Tuesday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Knights started quickly with the contest's first five goals in the first 9:46. Senior attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) got the Bears on the board at 1:52 with an assist from senior midfielder Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa). Walsh then scored 34 seconds later and Potsdam trailed 5-2 after 15 minutes.
  • It was all Clarkson in the second quarter with an 8-0 run to build a 13-2 halftime lead. Graduate student midfielder Andrew Kearney (Melbourne Beach, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) and senior midfielder Alex Alfieri (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) each scored twice for Clarkson.
  • The teams split the four goals in the third quarter and the Golden Knights were up 15-4 through 45 minutes. Junior attackman Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) scored at 9:12 with an assist from junior midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder). Walsh scored his second at 4:23 with a helper from junior captain Jacob Lynch (Alexandria Bay, N.Y./Alexandria).
  • Clarkson edged the Bears 4-3 in the fourth quarter for the 19-7 final. Junior defender Tommy Storrin (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central), senior midfielder Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) and Walsh netted Potsdam's final three markers.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Walsh led Potsdam with three goals and an assist. He now has 88 goals, 59 assists and 147 points. He is now 10th in assists and points and 11th in goals on the program's all-time lists.
  • Cree's goal was the 95th of his career, placing eighth on the program's list.
  • Junior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) allowed 13 goals and made five saves in the first half. Senior captain Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) stopped two shots and allowed six goals in the second half.
  • Junior goalie Griffin Emerson (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) earned the win for Clarkson with four saves and four goals allowed in the first 47:14. Senior Eric Gellasch (Hamilton, N.J./Princeton Day School) allowed three goals and stopped two shots in the last 12:46.
  • Junior faceoff specialist Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) dominated the circle again, winning 18 of his 24 attempts and collecting nine ground balls.
 
EVERY CHILD MATTERS
  • The Bears wore orange t-shirts during warmups and under their jerseys during the game to spread awareness for Native American children in Canada and the U.S. who survived the residential school system or didn't return home, as well as their families and communities.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday, when they host SUNY Canton at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
