Bears maul Wildcats, 22-8

UTICA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-0) overwhelmed SUNY Poly (0-1) 22-8 on Wednesday night to improve to 2-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears and Wildcats split the four goals in the first quarter. Graduate student midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) opened the scoring with an assist from freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena, N.Y.) at 7:44. Junior midfielder Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) had the other goal and it was 2-2 after 15 minutes.
  • Potsdam outscored SUNY Poly 8-3 in the second quarter. LaDue had three more tallies and MacWilliams and senior captain Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) each added two more. Senior defender Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had the first goal of the second. It was 10-5 at the break.
  • The Bears had a 5-2 edge in the third quarter to build a 15-7 advantage. Junior attack Tatiana Hillicke (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) scored twice and Thompson, LaDue and MacWilliams accounted for the rest.
  • It was all Potsdam in the fourth quarter, outscoring the hosts 7-1. MacWilliams, Thompson and Marks scored two more and LaDue had another.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • LaDue led the way with six goals, two assists, eight draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • MacWilliams had a career-high six goals and six ground balls.
  • Marks finished with four goals and an assist along with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Thompson had four points on two goals and two assists and Hillicke had two markers.
  • Pierce had four draw controls to go with her goal.
  • Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) earned the win with eight saves in the first 48:00. Junior Jane Olszewski (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) stopped the only shot she faced in the last 12 minutes.
  • Jayden Brown stopped 14 shots for the Wildcats.

The Bears face Husson College at 1 p.m. in Hilton Head, S.C. on Sunday.
