DUDLEY, MASS.—Third-seeded Endicott College (14-11) defeated the second-seeded SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (18-8) 3-0 in the New England Volleyball Conference Semifinals at Nichols College on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gulls opened the first set on a 13-2 run and rolled to a 25-14 victory.
- In set two, the teams traded leads and were never separated by more than two points. Junior outside hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) had five kills during the set and senior middle hitter Matt Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and junior middle hitter Mike Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had three apiece.
- Endicott started the third set with a 6-2 stretch, but the Bears answered with a 9-7 stretch to get within 13-11. However, the Gulls pulled away to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-0. Matt Kilinski added another four kills and Tenhagen had four more.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Tenhagen led the Bears with 11 kills, 10 digs and two blocks.
- Matt Kilinski finished with nine kills, five digs and two blocks.
- Freshman middle hitter Christopher Wong (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont) recorded six kills.
- Mike Kilinski contributed five kills and four blocks.
- Sophomore setter Alex Lombardo (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) totaled 26 kills and sophomore outside hitter Darius Dorsey-Rhule (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont) chipped in nine digs.
SEASON WRAP
The Bears completed their most successful season in their young history. They set the program record for overall (18) and conference wins (5). They won a record 12 matches in a row.
Matt Kilinski was named NEVC Athlete of the Year and sixth year head coach
Josh Stokes earned conference coach of the year honors. Tenhagen earned his second straight second team selection. Potsdam reached the postseason for the fourth consecutive year and claimed a spot in the semifinals for the second time. The young and talented program doesn't lose any players to graduation.
