Bears rally to down SUNY Poly, 9-8

UTICA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (6-5) rallied for seven runs in the top of the seventh to defeat SUNY Poly (6-5) 9-8 on the road on Wednesday afternoon. The second game was canceled due to inclement weather.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) got the Bears on the board first in the top of the third with a double to left that scored senior left fielder Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing).
  • The Wildcats answered with two in the bottom of the third and another in the fifth for a 3-1 lead.
  • Senior centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) drove in graduate student catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) with a single in the top of the sixth to make it a 3-2 contest.
  • SUNY Poly added a run in the bottom of the sixth before the Bears exploded for seven in the top of the seventh.
  • Potsdam scored the first run on an error. Dobransky then tied the game on a ground out.
  • Moscarello gave Potsdam a 5-4 lead with an infield single to plate junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls).
  • Senior designated player Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) knocked in two more with single to bring in Bennett and senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes).
  • Moscarello then scored on a wild pitch and Holmes came home on a passed ball to make it 9-4.
  • The Wildcats scored four times in the bottom of the seventh before freshman pitcher Chasity Johnson (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Heuvelton) locked down the win with her first career save.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (3-3) earned the win, allowing six earned runs on 13 hits. She struck out a career-high seven.
  •  Johnson allowed a run on three hits in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Moscarello was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI to lead the Bears offense.
  • Bennett was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Dobransky finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Trinity Critelli (Frankfort, N.Y./Frankford-Schuyler) (2-3) allowed eight runs, six earned, on seven hits, while striking out nine for the Wildcats.
  • Annabella Mondello (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) allowed an unearned run on a hit in 0.2 innings. She struck out one.
  • Second baseman Kimberly Birmingham led SUNY Poly at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
  • Shortstop Joely Welpe was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

The Bears host Plattsburgh State for a Friday twin bill to open SUNYAC play. The first pitch is 3 p.m.
