Bears bust Broncos

DELHI, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-18) swept a doubleheader from SUNY Delhi (7-15) on Tuesday afternoon.
 
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The Broncos were able to get an early jump over the Bears in the bottom of the first. Shortstop Stephanie Huckabee scored on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Bears battled back in the top of the second with four runs. Freshman first baseman Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) started things off with a two-run single. Senior left fielder Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) followed with a two-run homer, the first of her career.
  • Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) led off the top of the third with solo shot to extend the lead to 5-1.
  • The Bears were able to score four runs off four hits and one error in the top of the fourth to further their lead to 9-1. Lovejoy had an RBI single in the inning.
  • The Broncos scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bears countered with two runs in the top of the sixth on a ground out and a wild pitch to win the game 11-2.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
  • Cottrill (5-9) pitched for six innings allowing two runs on five hits and one strikeout.
  • Lovejoy paced the Bears going 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.
  • Horne was also 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.
  • Pitcher Danielle Seymoure (3-7) pitched six innings for the Broncos, allowing 11 runs, six earned, off 11 hits with two strikeouts.
  • Second basemen Riley Martin led Delhi offensively, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
 
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • With the base's loaded in the top of the first, a big hit down third baseline by senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) allowed graduate student right fielder Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) and senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) to score for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Bears scored four runs on four hits in the second to take the lead 6-0. Junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) contributed a two-run single. Dobransky added an RBI double and Bennett capped the rally with an RBI single.
  • The Broncos answered with two runs in the bottom of the third off a double by Huckabee to trail the Bears 6-2.
  • The Bears collected two unearned runs in the top of the fourth on RBI singles from LaForest and senior centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) to make it 8-2.
  • Bennett had another RBI single in the fifth and then scored on a wild pitch to close the scoring at 10-2.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Horne (4-9) went six innings, allowing two runs off four hits with three strikeouts for the Bears.
  • Bennett went 4-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Bears.
  • Dobransky was 1-for-3 with three runs, one RBI and one walk. The hit was 118th of her career, giving her sole possession of fourth place on the program's all-time list.
  • LaForest finished 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI.
  • Sophomore pitcher Kayleigh Allen (1-2) allowed five runs off six hits in just the first inning for Delhi.
  • Freshman pitcher Brianna May went the last four innings allowing four runs off six hits.
  • Senior first baseman Sidney Cooper led the Broncos going 1-for-3 with one run.
 
WHATS NEXT?
The Bears host Oswego State on Friday in a SUNYAC doubleheader at 3 and 5 p.m.
