POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (11-10) swept a Monday afternoon doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-8), taking both games by 11-1 scores.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- Clarkson scored twice on RBI singles in the top second inning.
- The Golden Knights broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the fourth, the big blow coming on a two-run homer to right off the bat of sophomore first baseman Lexi Rydelek (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee).
- Senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple down the right field line. Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) then brought her in with a sacrifice bunt.
- Clarkson tacked on two more in the top of the fifth on a double by senior right fielder Bridget Kerwin (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) to close the scoring.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
- Cottrill (4-4) allowed nine earned runs on 14 hits in five innings.
- Senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science & Renovation) was 2-for-3 for the Bears.
- Senior pitcher Devin Fitzpatrick (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) (6-4) allowed one run on four hits to pick up the win. She was also 2-for-4 with a run at the plate.
- Rydelek finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a Fitzpatrick homer to centerfield.
- Clarkson then added nine runs on eight hits in the top of the fourth to grab a 10-0 lead. Fitzpatrick had the exclamation point with a three-run bomb to right.
- An RBI triple from freshman third baseman Maddie Throumoulos (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas) brought in the final run in the top of the fifth.
- Graduate student second baseman Hope Sandor (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) drove in senior centerfield Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) in the bottom of the fifth for Potsdam's lone run.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
- Freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (3-4) allowed 11 runs on 11 hits in five innings for the Bears.
- Clarkson freshman pitcher Amanda Corrice (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) (4-0) allowed just three hits in four innings to earn the win. Freshman Bella Hotchkiss (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) allowed a run on two hits in the final inning.
- Fitzpatrick continued her monster day, going 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBI.
- Throumoulos was also 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
