Bears battle to draw with Mustangs in season finale, Bennett homers for 100th hit

MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball (14-21-1, 5-11-1 SUNYAC) season came to a close with a 6-6 draw at Morrisville State (9-19-1, 3-13-1) on Saturday afternoon. The game was called after six innings due to poor weather conditions and the second contest was canceled.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four hits in the top of the first. Junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) led off with a single and senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) drove her in with a triple. Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) followed with a single to score Dobransky. Graduate student catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) capped the rally with a two-run homer. The blast was the 100th hit of her career.
  • Rosick made it 5-0 in the top of the second with an RBI single that scored senior left fielder Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing).
  • Left fielder Cassidy Phillips got the Mustangs on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
  • Freshman first baseman Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) brought in the final Potsdam run on a ground out to short in the top of the third to make it 6-1.
  • Morrisville scored four times in the bottom of the third on two errors and a ground out to get within 6-5.
  • Center fielder Callie Lafontaine tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cottrill allowed two earned runs on five hits, while striking out six for the Bears.
  • Rosick was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
  • Bennett finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and graduate student designated player Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) was 2-for-3 with a run.
  • Kendall Darling allowed five runs on six hits in the first two innings for Morrisville.
  • Piper Kaylor gave up just one run on five hits in three innings of relief.
  • Shortstop Lindsey Fish was 2-for-2 for the Mustangs and scored a run.
 
SEASON WRAP UP
TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • The Bears matched their single-season overall (14) and conference (5) wins records and set the program mark with a seven-game winning streak.
  • Potsdam also broke its single-season records for team batting average (.293.), runs scored (180), runs-batted-in (144) and stolen bases (68).
  • Bears pitchers walked the fewest batters in a single season with 50.
  • Potsdam had its second most hits (271) and third highest on-base percentage (.342) in a season.
INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Cottrill won a program single-season record eight games in 2025 and had the third most complete games (14) and innings pitched (112.1). She is also second in career wins (17), complete games (31) and innings pitched (300.1), fifth in appearances, sixth in earned run average (4.71) and eighth in strikeouts (108).
  • Dobransky finishes her career ranked second in program history in hits (130), second in triples (11) and total bases (173), fourth in runs (71) and RBI (60), fifth in doubles (21), eighth in batting average (.327), 10th in slugging (.436) and on-base percentage (.356).
  • Bennett is the 12th Bear to reach the 100-hit plateau. She is 10th in all-time hits with 101. Bennett is also second in stolen bases (50) fifth in triples, seventh in runs (57) and eighth in RBI (49) and doubles (19).
  • Senior center fielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) played in 136 contests in her career, the second most in program history. She also ranks 14th in hits (89) and 16th in runs (44) and RBI (40).
  • Lovejoy completes her career ranked fifth in runs (61) and triples (5), 12th in stolen bases (22), 14th in batting average (.296) and on-base percentage (.350) and 19th in hits (76).
  • The contest marked the completion of the careers of seniors Dobransky, Bennett, Lovejoy, Cottrill, Moscarello, third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) and junior Bailey Traynor (North Bangor, N.Y./Brushton-Moira).
