Hawks sweep twin bill from Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Hilbert College (5-6) swept both ends of a doubleheader by 3-0 scores from the SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (4-4) on Friday night in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Hilbert opened the first set on an 8-2 run, but the Bears fought back to within 23-22 before falling 25-22. Junior outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) had five kills and freshman outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) added four.
  • The Hawks started the second set with a 12-3 run and rolled to a 25-16 win. Hagerman and freshman middle hitter Logan Georgia (Owego, N.Y./O\wego) each had two kills for the Bears.
  • Hilbert ran out to a 13-7 lead before hanging on for a 25-20 win to clinch the match in set three. Prest had another six kills and Hagerman chipped in two.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
  • Prest led the Bears with 12 kills, 17 digs and an ace. Hagerman had eight kills, 12 kills and an ace. Georgia finished with five kills and four blocks.
  • Senior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) recorded 25 assists, three blocks and an ace.
  • Junior setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) contributed 18 digs and junior middle hitter Jacqueline Fornabia (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Central Catholic) rounded out the leaders with two blocks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Set one of the second contest was tight and saw big runs late before the Hawks claimed the 25-22 win. Freshman outside hitter Raven Sessoms (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) led Potsdam with three kills, while Fornabia and sophomore setter Meredith Harnden (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) each had two.
  • The Hawks used a 5-1 run to take the second set by the same 25-22 score. Sessoms had two more kills.
  • Hilbert completed the two-match sweep with a 10-3 start to the third set. They took the finale 25-22 as well. Georgia had three more kills.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Sessoms had four kills and an ace.
  • Layer closed her day with three kills and 14 digs.
  • Harnden had three kills, three assists and a block.
  • Junior setter Gabriella Luna (Schenectady, N.Y./Mekeel Christian Academy) posted a game-high five aces to go with three assists.
  • Madore had eight digs.
  • Junior defensive specialist Madison Gilliland (Rossville, Ga./Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe) recorded five digs and an ace.
  • Freshman setter Julia Holmes (Blossvale, N.Y./Camden) added nine assists.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at 2 and 4 p.m. with two matches at Vermont State – Johnson.
