Bengals edge Bears in SUNYAC opener, 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Buffalo State (4-4-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) scored in the 69th minute to break a tie and edge the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (6-2-1, 0-1) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the SUNYAC opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State jumped out in front just 59 seconds into the contest as sophomore forward Olivia Kilmer (Hammondsport, N.Y./Avoca) pulled away after a feed from sophomore midfielder Makenzie Below (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties).
  • Bears junior goalie Megan Fry (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) stopped five shots in the first half to keep her team within one.
  • Potsdam got even at 33:13 as sophomore midfielder Abigail Bianchi (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) sent a long pass ahead, catching senior forward Meg Napoleon (Lyons, N.Y./Newark) in stride. She sped forward and fired the ball to the right of Bengals junior goalie Addy Williams (Grapevine, Texas/Grapevine).
  • Buffalo State grabbed the lead again at 68:29. Senior forward Emily Maczka (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) passed the ball into the box from the right side. Freshman midfielder Reagan Michel (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) stopped the ball and chipped it to freshman midfielder Riley Stevenson (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland), who deposited it into the net.
