Bears fall to Hawks on Senior Day

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (5-20, 4-14) closed out its season with a 68-48 defeat to the SUNY New Paltz Hawks (23-2, 17-1) as they celebrated Senior Day on Saturday afternoon in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Bears were outscored 18-11 in the opening quarter. Junior guard Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) and sophomore center Reese Shambo (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) led Potsdam with three points each. 
  • Points in the second quarter were 20-16 in favor of New Paltz as Potsdam went into the half down 38-27. Richards and Shambo both finished the half with six points. 
  • The Hawks stretched their lead to 20 towards the end of the third quarter with a five-minute 13-4 run. The Bears were held to seven points in the quarter. Senior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) had five of Potsdam's points in the third, bringing her total to nine. 
  • Alcock went on a personal 6-3 run early in the fourth quarter, becoming the only Bear in double figures with 15 points. Alcock and Shambo then combined for an 8-0 run as Potsdam outscored New Paltz 14-13 in the final quarter. The final score was 68-48, Hawks. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Bears shot 29.6-percent from the field. The Hawks shot 41.0-percent. 
  • Potsdam was outrebounded 47-34. 
  • The Bears had 11 steals in the contest, and the Hawks had 10. 
  • Alcock finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Shambo had 13 points and six rebounds. 
  • Junior Hawks' guard Hannah Vanderzee (Ravena, N.Y./Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) led all scorers and recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, to go with three assists, five blocks, and five steals. Graduate guard Brianna Fitzgerald (Dix Hills, N.Y./Island Trees) had 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. 

SENIOR DAY 
Prior to today's game, the Bears celebrated their three graduating guards: DaeLynn Alcock, senior Paris Jones (Houston, Texas/Dulles), and captain Sara Richards.
