Bears fall to Cortland in SUNYAC first round

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The sixth-seed SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (11-13-2, 6-7-1) was defeated by the third-seed SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (15-7-4, 8-4-2) 4-1 in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs on Wednesday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Bears scored first at 6:23 in the opening period as freshman forward Sophia Leas (Whitehorse, Yukon/Ontario Hockey Academy) netted her first career goal, assisted by senior defenseman Elise Clifford (Auburn, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) and senior forward Josie Purdy (White Lake, Nova Scotia/Ontario Hockey Academy). 
  • Cortland's Fanny Aneborn tied the game 1-1 three minutes later, with assists from Katie Mahoney and Sophie Hart. 
  • Aneborn put the Red Dragons ahead 2-1 23 seconds into the second period. Mahoney and Katie Diem picked up the assists. 
  • Aneborn completed the hat trick at 7:09 in the second, with Mahoney earning her third assist. 
  • The Red Dragons made it 4-1 early in the third period as Grace Karakas scored, assisted by Gillian Dinsmore and Drew Kopek. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Potsdam was outshot 39-16. 
  • Neither team was successful on the power play, with Potsdam going 0-for-1 and Cortland 0-for-2. 
  • The Bears blocked 15 shots in the contest. The Red Dragons blocked two. 
  • Senior Bears' goaltender Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) stopped 35 shots in the contest.
  • Cortland goalie Eline Gillodes made 15 saves.

The Bears say goodbye to nine players at the end of the 2025-26 season: forwards Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles), Josie Purdy (White Lake, Nova Scotia/Ontario Hockey Academy), Megan Mills (Mono, Ontario/North York Storm), Isabel Boyd (Norwood, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers), and assistant captain Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets); defenseman Elise Clifford (Auburn, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles), captain Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles), and assistant captain Victoria Proulx (Rockville, Ontario/Post University); goaltender and captain Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières).
