Furious rally gives Bears third split in Florida

NAPLES, FLA.—The SUNY Potsdam softball (3-3) scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Brooklyn College (0-8) 7-6 in Thursday's Florida finale. In the early game, the Bears took their lumps in a 10-1 loss to Bethany College (9-1).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (BETHANY)
  • The Bison grabbed a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from third baseman Emma Jackson in the bottom of the first and her homer to left in the third.
  • Senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) scored on an error in the top of the fifth to get the Bears on the board.
  • Bethany broke the game open with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth.
  • They tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on four more hits.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (BETHANY)
  • Junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) (2-1) allowed seven runs on 10 hits and three walks in the first five innings. Sophomore Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) allowed three runs on four hits in 0.2 innings.
  • Victoria Wehrberger (3-0) scattered seven hits and didn't allow an earned run, while striking out seven for the win.
  • Freshman first baseman Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) was 3-for-3. Rosick, Horne and junior left fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) were each 1-for-3.
  • Jackson led the Bison, going 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and two walks. Left fielder Amber Dedmon was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
 
 
 HOW IT HAPPENED (BROOKLYN)
  • A wild pitch in the top of the first and an infield hit in the third gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
  • Junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) drove in senior pinch runner Lily Gray (Chaumont, N.Y./Thousand Islands) in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to one.
  • Brooklyn scored twice in the top of the fifth and seventh and led 6-1 with three outs to go.
  • The Bears rallied for six runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the win.
  • Freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) drove in Rosick to score the first run.
  • Freshman second baseman Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.
  • Cronin knocked in St. Clair to close the gap to two runs.
  • Wasserman then tied the game with a two-run single left to bring in Pleat and Horne.
  • Cronin crossed the plate as the decisive run on a wild pitch.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Kuttruff (1-0) picked up her first career win in relief. She allowed two runs on a hit and struck out two in two innings.
  • Horne started for the Bears and allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out three.
  • Jessica Bowe pitched the first 6.2 innings for the Bulldogs and received a no-decision. She allowed seven runs, six earned, on five hits and four walks.
  • Victoria Elderbaum (0-2) allowed a hit and didn't get an out as the winning run scored.
  • Wasserman was 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Bears.
  • St. Clair and Cronin were each 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
  • Horne was 1-for-4 with a run and Pleat was 1-for-3 with a run.
  • Addy Cook was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run to pace Brooklyn.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears wrap up their Florida trip in Fort Myers tomorrow with a 9 a.m. game with Crown College and an 11 a.m. contest with Westfield State.
