Bears split with Skidmore on the road

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (4-6) split a doubleheader at Skidmore College on Friday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds took game one 10-1 and the Bears claimed game two 13-7.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The Thoroughbreds opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the of the second. Left fielder Rachel Monser drove in both with a single.
  • Skidmore extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from designated player Delaney Swain and a wild pitch.
  • The Bears got a run back in the top of fifth as freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) hit her first collegiate home run.
  • The Thoroughbreds got the run back in the bottom of the fifth on another wild pitch.
  • Skidmore put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits. Right fielder Natalie Mayne hit a three-run bomb to cap the inning.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
  • Freshman pitcher Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) (1-1) allowed four runs on two hits and six walks, while striking out three in her first collegiate start as a pitcher.
  • Sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) allowed six runs on six hits in the last 2.2 innings. She struck out four.
  • Skidmore pitcher Mallory Allen (4-1) earned the win after allowing one run on six hits.
  • St. Clair led the Bears offense, going 2-for-3 with the homer and a run scored.
  • Horne and freshman first baseman Kaidence Cronin (Onondaga Nation/LaFayette) were each 1-for-3 and junior designated player Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) went 1-for-2.
  •  Mayne finished 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs and two walks. Swain was 2-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and a walk.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • The Bears got three runs in the top of the first. St. Clair doubled in senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) for the first run. Kuttruff scored on a wild pitch for the second. Junior left fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) picked up an RBI on a groundout that scored St. Clair to make it 3-0.
  • Skidmore answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on an error and a sacrifice fly from shortstop Nate' Burley.
  • Rosick got two runs back for Potsdam in the top of the second with a two-run homer that scored Birmingham. Kuttruff then scored on an error to make it 6-2.
  • Second baseman Sam Waters drove in Skidmore's third run with another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.
  • Potsdam added a run in the top of the fourth as St. Clair knocked in Kuttruff with a single to left.
  • The Thoroughbreds narrowed the gap to 7-5 with doubles by Swain and Mayne.
  • The Bears padded their lead with five runs on four hits in the top of the fifth. Birmingham had an RBI single. Rosick had a two-run single. Sophomore pinch runner Mia Cooper (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) stole home and St. Clair capped the rally with an RBI single.
  • Skidmore countered with two in the bottom of the fifth. Third baseman Lulu Mickle hit a two-run double.
  • Cronin knocked in the final run of the game with a ground out in the top of the fifth that brought in St. Clair.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Birmingham (3-2) picked up her third win of the season after allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and four walks, while striking out five.
  • Shayne Cleeve (2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings. Piper Bockler allowed seven runs, five earned, on six hits and two walks in 2.2 innings. Mayne allowed just a run on three hits in three innings, striking out two and walking two.
  • St. Clair was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Rosick was 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Birmingham was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI at the plate.
  • Mickle was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI to lead Skidmore.

The Bears head to SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
