Mustangs edge Bears on Senior Day, 15-13

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Morrisville (5-7, 2-6 SUNYAC) held off the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-11, 1-7) 15-13 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior midfielder Iohseriio Tabor (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) scored two goals in the first quarter, while freshman attack Abbey Light (Jay, N.Y./Lake Placid) and sophomore attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) had the other two tallies. Light's goal was the first of her career and Thompson's strike came while the Bears were a player up. A 4-0 run to finish the quarter gave the Mustangs a 7-4 lead after 15 minutes.
  • The two teams split four goals in the second quarter and Morrisville led 9-6 at the half. Tabor and senior captain Auna Shadle (Massena, N.Y./Massena) each scored for Potsdam. Shadle's goal was a man-up marker and she assisted on Tabors' goal.
  • The Bears outscored the Mustangs 5-2 in the third quarter to forge an 11-11 tie through 45 minutes. Tabor, Shadle and Thompson scored Potsdam's first three goals and senior attack Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) netted two goals in 1:24 go even the score.
  • Morrisville junior midfielder Anyssia Ingersoll (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) scored four goals in the fourth quarter and it proved to the be the difference. MacWilliams and sophomore midfielder Maggie Akin (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) got the Bears within two, but they ran out of time.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam outshot Morrisville 39-29.
  • Senior goalie Olivia Minarich (Albany, N.Y./Albany) allowed 12 goals and made nine saves in 50:16. Fellow senior goalie Jane Olszewski (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) gave up three goals in 9:44.
  • Mustangs junior goalie Aniyah Smith (Grovetown, Ga./Grovetown) made 14 saves to earn the win.
  • MacWilliams led the Bears with three goals, two assists, four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Shadle finished with two goals, three assists, five draw controls and a caused turnover. Tabor had four goals and Thompson scored twice and collected two ground balls, two draw controls and caused two turnovers.
  • Ingersoll totaled nine goals, two assists, 10 draw controls, six caused turnovers and four ground balls to lead Morrisville. Senior midfielder Deli Vega-Haley (Worcester, N.Y./Worcester) and junior attack Mary Trowbridge (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) each scored twice.
 
SENIOR DAY
  • Prior to the game, the Bears honored seniors Robin Gorton (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls), Tatiana Hillicke (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), MacWilliams, Shadle, Minarich and Olszewski for their careers.

The Bears wrap up the season at SUNY Canton on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest.
