CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (9-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) breezed past SUNY Canton (2-8, 0-6) 14-2 on Wednesday night. The victory gives the Bears their third straight postseason berth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior attackman Billy Kozloski (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) scored the only goals of the first quarter. He opened the scoring at 12:33 and finished a feed from freshman midfielder Ronin Oakes (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) at 5:49.
- Kozloski extended his personal run to five with the first three goals of the second quarter. Junior midfielder Andrew Gubbins (South Pomfret, Vt./Woodstock Union) assisted on the first and freshman defender Damyn LeClair (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) assisted on the next two. After Canton finally got on the board, Oakes scored followed by two from senior attackman Rowisonkies Barnes (Akwesasne, N.Y./The Hill Academy) to make it 8-1 at the half. Gubbins assisted on Oake's tally and senior captain Jakob Lynch (Alexandria Bay, N.Y./Thousand Islands) and LeClair each set up Barnes.
- Potsdam extended its lead to 10-1 after three quarters on goals from Barnes and senior defender Alex Farben-Griggs (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains). Sophomore midfielder Grant Dicob (Watertown, N.Y./Carthage) Kozloski had the assists.
- The Bears closed out the win with a 4-1 fourth quarter. Sophomore attackman Braydon Goddard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) LeClair, Gubbins and Barnes each scored. LeClair, Barnes and senior attackman Crayton Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River) each had assists.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Bears outshot the Roos 49-18 had a 51-26 advantage in ground balls.
- Senior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made eight saves and allowed one goal in the first 53:59. It was his program record 24th win. Freshman Tim Brooder (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) made two saves and allowed a goal in the last 6:01.
- Hayden Todd made 16 saves for Canton.
- Kozloski finished with six points on five goals and an assist. LeClair had a career high five points on a goal and four assists to go with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
- Barnes had five points on four goals and an assist along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
- Senior captain Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) was a perfect 19-for-19 in the faceoff circle. He also picked 14 ground balls.
- Gubbins had a goal and two assists.
- Jonney McLear and Brady Frost each scored for the Roos.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears host Oswego State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the regular season finale. The contest will determine their playoff seeding.
