Cortland takes two from Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (10-5, 2-0 SUNYAC) swept a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-9, 0-2) on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons took game one 9-0 and game two 9-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
  • There was no scoring in game one until Cortland broke the game open with six runs in the top of the fifth.
  • Freshman pinch hitter Emma Robins (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) capped the rally with a two-run single.
  • The Red Dragons scored three more in the top of the sixth to seal the win.
  • Senior shortstop Kaeli McAnally (Islip, N.Y./Islip) closed the scoring with a two-run single to make it 9-0.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME ONE)
  • Junior pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) (4-4) allowed nine runs, three earned, on 10 hits and two walks for the Bears.
  • Sophomore Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) (4-2) scattered three hits and struck out six to pick up the shutout.
  • Freshman second baseman Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus), freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) and junior third baseman Maddalyn Wasserman (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) each had hits.
  • Junior third baseman Katie Stork (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Cortland.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
  • The Red Dragons broke open the contest late again in the finale.
  • Cortland scored one in the top of the second, fourth and fifth before tacking on six in the top of the seventh.
  • Senior designated player Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) drove in two runs in the top of the seventh with a double to left.
  • The Bears rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Birmingham knocked in Wasserman with an infield hit and St. Clair charged home on a error.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME TWO)
  • Sophomore pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (2-4) allowed nine runs on 12 hits and two walks in six innings for Potsdam. Kuttruff allowed one hit before getting the last three outs.
  • Freshman Olivia DiSalvo (Scotch Plains, N.Y./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) (4-0) threw five scoreless innings while giving up just two hits and striking out five for the win. Junior Kaitlyn Macumber (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) picked up the save, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in the last two innings.
  • St. Clair was 2-for-3 with a run for the Bears. Wasserman, Birmingham and junior right fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) each had a hit.
  • Senior first baseman Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Lakeland), sophomore catcher Laila Smith (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) and junior second baseman Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) each had two hits for the Red Dragons.

The Bears host SUNY Morrisville for a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon in another important SUNYAC twin bill.
