Bears split in season finale

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team (14-26, 4-14) split Saturday's season finale doubleheader at Fredonia (17-21, 11-7), taking game one 3-1 and losing game two 7-1. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
  • The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Brooke Caldwell came in on a double by Mack Celauro. 
  • The Bears tied the contest in the top of the fifth inning as sophomore pinch runner Kalissa Young (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) scored on an error. 
  • Freshman center fielder Payton St. Clair (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to put Potsdam ahead 3-1. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1)
  • Junior Bears' pitcher Emily Birmingham (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) (7-14) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits and one walk, striking out seven batters. 
  • Fredonia pitcher Kendall Phillips (10-9) recorded the loss, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk, with 11 strikeouts. 
  • St. Clair led Potsdam's offense, going 2-for-3 behind the plate, with two RBI, and her seventh home run of the season. 
  • For the Blue Devils, Celauro was 1-for-2. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
  • Potsdam struck first as freshman pitcher Chloe Kuttruff (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) came home on a bases-loaded single by sophomore first baseman Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West). 
  • Avery Hill hit a home run for Fredonia in the bottom of the second to tie the game. 
  • The Blue Devils took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Mia Eckhoff scored on a single by Kim Dorane. Madison DeVore came in on a wild pitch. Kayla Lynn scored on a fielding error. 
  • Fredonia added three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lynn came home on a single by Hill. Lily Foglia scored on a muffed throw. Kristen Lajewski had the final run of the contest, coming in on a Caldwell single. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2)
  • Kuttruff (1-4) was credited with the loss, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks, with one strikeout in 3.0 innings. Horne allowed three runs on six hits, recording one strikeout in 3.0 innings. 
  • Fredonia pitcher Sabrina Edwards-Smith (5-7) gave up one run on four hits to earn the win, striking out four batters. 
  • Junior Bears' right fielder Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was 1-for-2 behind the plate. Horne, St. Clair, and Birmingham all went 1-for-3. 
  • For the Blue Devils, Lynn, Hill, and Caldwell were 2-for-3. 

SEASON WRAP UP
The Bears end the season saying goodbye to four players: senior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y.), junior utility Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley), junior outfielder Sophia Pleat, and senior outfielder Lily Gray (Chaumont, N.Y./Thousand Islands). 

Rosick set the new single-season stolen base record for the Bears, finishing with 28. St. Clair was one hit shy of tying the single-season hits record with 47 and of tying the single-season home run record with seven.
