Bears down Badgers, Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 3 POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (4-5) swept Vermont State University-Johnson (4-5) 3-0 and rallied for a 3-2 win over Husson University (0-6) on Day one of the North Country Challenge.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (JOHNSON)
  • A kill by senior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) broke a 9-9 tie and the Bears finished set one on a 16-5 run for a 25-14 victory. Sophomore outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) had four kills, while Redeye and senior outside hitter Ruffos (Parish, N.Y./Altmar-Parish-Williamstown) each added three.
  • Potsdam closed set two on a 16-10 stretch to claim a 25-19 win. Hagerman had another four kills and Redeye and Ruffos matched their set one totals with three.
  • The Badgers continued to rally from deficits in set three, but the Bears scored the final three points for the 25-22 win and completed the sweep.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (JOHNSON)
  • Hagerman led the Bears with 11 kills, nine digs and four aces.
  • Redeye finished with eight kills and two blocks, while Ruffos had six kills, six digs and a block.
  • Senior setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) posted 12 digs and five aces.
  • Freshman setter Isabella Miller (Owego, N.Y./Owego) recorded a career-high 17 assists and three aces.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (HUSSON)
  • The Eagles opened up a sizable lead midway through the first set before the Bears tied the match at 23. However, Husson recovered to take the last two points for a 25-23 win. Redeye paced Potsdam with four kills. Ruffos and Hagerman each had two.
  • The Bears rallied from an early deficit to lead 25-24 in set two, but the Eagles answered with the final three points to win 27-25 and go up 2-0 in the match. Redeye posted three kills, while Hagerman, senior outside hitter Ella Murtagh (Massena, N.Y./Massena) and freshman right side Violet Phillips (Avon, N.Y./Avon) all had two.
  • Set three was neck and neck but the Bears held off Husson for a 25-19 win. Phillips had three more kills and Hagerman had two.
  • Potsdam outlasted the Eagles 26-24 in set four to even the match 2-2. Hagerman went off for seven kills in the set.
  • The Bears ran away with set five, opening up a 10-3 lead and never looking back for a 15-5 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (HUSSON)
  • Hagerman added 16 kills, 16 digs, four aces and two blocks to her total.
  • Redeye had 12 kills, and three blocks.
  • Miller had another personal best 23 assists and six aces.
  • Madore registered a career-high 30 digs along with two aces.
  • Freshman setter Madison Catlin (Bakersfield, Calif./Frontier) also had a personal best 23 assists. Ruffos, Redeye and Hagerman each had two kills.
 
OTHER RESULTS
In the middle game, Johnson defeated Husson 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-23).
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears host Hilbert College tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. They then face Keuka College at 5 p.m.
