Bears rally past Badgers for season’s first win, 3-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (1-1) rallied from an early deficit to defeat Vermont State Johnson (0-1) 3-1 on Wednesday evening. Sophomore outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) led the charge with 14 kills, 12 digs and a block.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears scored the first four points of set one, but the Badgers rallied to claim a 25-20 win. Freshman right side Violet Phillips (Avon, N.Y./Avon) paced Potsdam with two kills.
  • The Bears pulled away for a 25-19 victory in set two. Hagerman totaled five kills, while senior outside hitter Sarah Ruffos (Parish, N.Y./Atlmar-Parish-Williamstown) added three.
  • Potsdam edged the Badgers 25-21 in set three to take the lead for good. Hagerman added seven more kills in the set.
  • A 7-2 start in set four gave Potsdam the early advantage, but a late run put Johnson in front 20-19. However, the Bears finally put the Badgers away 25-23 to claim the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Phillips finished with seven kills and two aces. Senior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) registered six kills and four blocks.
  • Freshman setter Isabella Miller (Owego, N.Y./Owego) had career-highs in assists (16) and digs (14) to go with two aces.
  • Freshman setter Madison Catlin (Bakersfield, Calif./Frontier) had a personal best 11 digs and senior defensive specialist Olivia Eves (Chaumont, N.Y./General Brown) added eight digs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears square off with Hartwick College at 4 p.m. on Friday on the first day of the Plattsburgh Cardinal Classic.
