POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior midfielder
Jake Trubia (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored in the 44th minute to give the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-3-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) a 1-0 victory over SUNY Delhi (6-2, 1-1) on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field in the SUNYAC opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Most of the first half saw action in the midfield, but not many scoring chances.
- Potsdam finally broke through with 1:58 left in the first half. Sophomore forward Andres Arce (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) launched a free kick into the middle of the box and Trubia headed it into the right corner of the net.
- The Broncos nearly tied the contest with just over nine minutes left. Freshman forward Damien Barnes (Clarksville, Tenn./Clarksville) was robbed point blank by Bears senior goalie Sam Allen (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt). The save preserved the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Broncos outshot Potsdam 12-7 and each team had three corner kicks.
- Allen made three of his four saves in the second half to pick up his fourth career victory and second shutout.
- Delhi senior goalie Salvatore Meloni (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) stopped just one shot.
- The Bears are now 2-1-1 in the all-time meeting with the Broncos.
