Bears blank Wolves for first season’s first win, 1-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior forward Thomas Wendel (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) scored in the 61st minute to lift the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (1-1) to a 1-0 win over Keuka College (0-2) in its home opener.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears outshot the Wolves 7-0 in the first half.
  • Wendel appeared to score in the first half but was ruled offsides.
  • Keuka also had a strong scoring chance waved off for offsides.
  • In the 61st minute, senior midfielder Luke Tytler (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) send a pass ahead from the midfield to junior forward Brodie Spillman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton). Spillman then sent a cross from the left side to Wendel for the goal.
  • The Wolves had their best chance of the game as time expired, but Potsdam junior goalie James Kelm (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) made the stop to preserve the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot Keuka 16-2 and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Wolves freshman goalie Jakob Snyder (Warminster, Pa./Upper Moreland) finished with seven saves.
  • Kelm made one save to earn his second career win and second career shutout.
  • The goal was the seventh of Wendel's career.
  • The Bears are now 5-2-3 against Keuka in the all-time series and 4-0-2 in the last six meetings.

The Bears head to Castleton tomorrow afternoon for a 4 p.m. showdown with the Spartans.
