Intramural Basketball Rules


RULES FOR INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL


The rules governing intramural basketball shall be the same as college basketball except where specific changes are noted.


RULE 1: The two halves shall be of 16-minute duration.

a. During the first half and the first 12 minutes of the second half the clock shall be stopped only for the official time-out.

-The official time-out may be taken at the request of either team or at the discretion of the officials.

b. During the final four minutes of the second half the clock shall be stopped as provided for in official basketball rules.

c. There shall be a three-minute intermission between the first and second half.

RULE 2: Each team shall be allowed a total of three time-outs per game without penalty.

a. For each time-out beyond three, the calling of time-out shall be treated as a technical foul.

b. Each official time-out shall be of one-minute duration.

RULE 3: Overtime periods

a. If the score is tied at the end of the regulation playing time, an intermission of one-minute duration shall be allowed after which an overtime period of three-minute duration shall be played.

1. During the overtime period the watch shall be stopped when the ball is dead, just as is done in the final four minutes of regulation playing time.

2. Each team shall be allowed one time-out in the over-time period.

b. If the score is tied at the end of the first overtime period an intermission of one-minute duration shall be allowed after which a "sudden death" overtime period shall be played.

1. This overtime period shall continue until one team has scored two points, that team then being declared the winner.

2. During the overtime period the watch shall be stopped when the ball is dead, just as is done in the final four minutes of regulation playing time.

RULE 4: Fouls.

a. During the first half and the first 12 minutes of the second half there will be no bonus free throws. During this time all fouls shall be penalized with either a side out or two free throws.

b. All fouls shall be penalized with one free throw except:

1. Fouls by the defensive player when the offensive player is in the act of shooting.

2. Flagrant fouls either by the offense or defense.

(Note: In order that excessively rough play and deliberate or flagrant fouls be discouraged, referees are expected to assess the two-shot penalty whenever such action is warranted.)

c. During the final four minutes of the second half and during all overtime play the bonus free throw (or one and one) rules shall be in effect.

1. The scorekeeper-timekeeper shall notify the refer- ees when there are four minutes remaining in the game.

RULE 5: A team must have at least four players present within five minutes after the scheduled start of the game or the result will be forfeiture.
