Intramural Broomball Rules


Playing time

1. Two 15-minute halve

2. Tied games — Sudden death overtime with three players per team and no goalkeeper.

Players

1. Positions-Goalkeeper, Left Defense, Right Defense, Left Wing, Center Right Win

2. No more than six players on ice at any time

3. Players may substitute at any time providing that the player leaving the ice shall be in the players' bench and out of play before exchange

4. Any players in the penalty box who are going to be substituted for must be in the players' bench before substitution can be made

5. Must have THREE men and TWO women on the ice

Equipment

1. Players must provide own clean sneakers

2. Brooms and helmets will be provided

Playing Rules

A.) A major or minor penalty shall be assessed to a player who:

1. Body check

2. Elbows

3. Charges (runs, jumps, or charges into an opponent)

4. Cross check

5. Clips (any action used to prevent players from retaining possession by falling or sliding along the ice directly in path of ball

6. Hooking stick

7. Slashes with stick

8. Uses unnecessary roughness

9. Throws his or her broom

10. Trips an opponent with point of broom

11. Spears or butts an opponent with point of broom

(IF GOAL IS MADE BY OPPOSING TEAM WHILE TEAM IS SHORT DUE TO PENALTIES, THE FIRST OF SUCH PENALTIES IS TERMINATED.)

B.) Minor penalties shall be assessed to any player who:

1. Interference

a. interferes or impedes progress of opponent without bal

b. deliberately knocks a broom out of opponent's hand

2. Broken broom

a. fails to drop immediately

b. if a broom is broken, only the player with that broom may receive another from the players' box

(If another player brings him or her one or a broom is thrown to the player, it is a minor penalty. The goal-keeper is an exception; a player on ice may bring, not throw, him one.

3. Deliberately falls on the ball (except the goalkeeper within crease)

a. major penalty if the goalkeeper falls on the ball when the ball is behind the goal line and the goalkeeper's body is entirely outside boundaries

b. penalty shot when player (except goalkeeper) falls on ball, holds ball onto body, picks ball up with hand within the goal crease

4. Carries broom above the shoulder

a. batting the ball above the shoulders — FACE OFF

5. Picks the ball up from the ice

C. Use of hands and feet

1. Any player can make a pass with his or her fee

2. A player may stop, bat the ball in the air with his or her hand or push ball on the ice with his or her hand

a. ball cannot be passed with hand between two player

b. if a player from his or her own team plays the ball from a hand pass —face off

c. the goalkeeper may close the hand behind the goal line. Minor penalty for any other player

D. Off sides

1. Players cannot precede the ball into the attacking zone — FACE OF

2. If the attacking team loses the ball, possession must be regained before it crosses the center line into the team's defending area or the entire team must pull back of the center line before the ball is brought back into the attacking area

E. Deliberate stalling

1. Icing the ball — FACE OF

a. should any player shoot or deflect the ball from his or her own half beyond the goal line of opposing tea


2. Freezing the ball

a. the ball must be kept in motion — minor penalty


F. Goals shall be scored

1. If the ball is put into goal in any manner by defending team after being played by attacking team

2. If attacker kicks ball and it is deflected into goal by defending player (except goalkeeper)

3. If a shot of attacker has been deflected into goal by striking broom, running shoes or any part of body of another attacker

4. No goals

a. deliberately kicked, thrown, or any other means than broom

b. deflected off official

c. an attacker, unless having possession of ball, is not allowed to stand in goal crease unless ball is in goal crease are

Penalties

A. Minor penalty — off the ice for one minute — no substitution

B. Major penalty — off the ice for three minute

1. Three major penalties — off the ice for the remainder of the game. Substitute replaces player in penalty box

C. Penalty shot

1. The play starts from the center face-off spot between one player and the goalkeeper

2. All other players withdraw to other side of rink

3. The ball must be kept in motion toward opponents' goal, and once it is shot the play shall be considered complete

D. Goalkeeper penalties

1. No goalkeeper shall be sent to the penalty bench

2. Penalty shall be served by any other player on his team who was on the ice when infraction incurred

E. Face-offs

1. Official drops ball between two brooms of two players

Players shall stand squarely facing opponents' end of the rink. All other players must be at least 15 feet away on the sides
