Maxcy Hall has been the home of SUNY Potsdam Athletics since its completion in the early 1970’s. The athletic complex was named for Dr. John W. Maxcy, who served as chairman of the College’s health and physical education department from 1920-1964. It has seen many upgrades over time, including the complete overhaul of the ice arena in 2013. It is currently undergoing the first phase of major new renovations.

Phase I of the project began during the 2024-25 academic year and saw the installation of new bleachers and scoreboards in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. This year will see the complete revitalization of Maxcy’s Main Concourse and reconstruction of the Field House.

The Main Concourse will have a new ceiling, new tiled floors, new lighting and new graphics as well as freshly painted walls. The area will feature a new area for student-athletes, students and fans to hang out. Newly renovated bathrooms will be located at each end of the concourse. The coaches hallway and lounge will also be retiled and repainted.

The Field House will see many new amenities. The brand new floor will be Olympic-competition certified. There will be a new running track. The new drop-down netting system will allow for multiple practices and other events to take place simultaneously. The field house has served as the home of the Bears Volleyball since 2013. The volleyball teams and their fans will enjoy the new sound system and video scoreboard. The building’s second elevator will be installed in field house, running to the concourse to increase the accessibility for patrons.

The Main Concourse will be completed in the coming weeks and the Field House will be ready for the Fall 2026 semester.
