Dan Bronson became SUNY Potsdam’s director of athletic communications in August 2011. The Potsdam native has 17 years in the field.
Bronson oversees media relations for the College’s 19 varsity programs. He produces publications for the athletic department and each of its teams. He maintains the official athletics website and social media accounts. He is the contact for local, regional and national media as well as the NCAA, SUNYAC and NEVC. Bronson is the primary statistician for all athletic programs. He is also responsible for over 100 web broadcasts of home athletic events per season, a program he started during the 2012-13 academic year. Bronson is also responsible for researching the history of each team in order to create a comprehensive record book. He is a member of the College’s athletics hall of fame committee and College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Prior to joining the staff at SUNY Potsdam, Bronson spent four years as a social studies teacher in Cortland, N.Y., earning tenure. In addition to teaching he served as assistant modified softball coach for three seasons and worked with the Cortland Video Club. With the CVC he broadcast multiple sports with students and other staff on the school’s television station. After completing his teaching career, he gained athletic administration experience as a compliance and educational services intern at the College of William and Mary. He also briefly volunteered with the SUNY Cortland sports information department and spent the following summer as a production assistant for the HBO Series

Bronson has a passion and background for sports broadcasting. He has done play-by-play and color for Bears hockey, basketball, lacrosse, soccer and St. Lawrence University football on local radio. He has also called 2004, 2006 and 2009 NCAA Tournament contests for the Hobart College ice hockey team, including the 2006 and 2009 Frozen Four semifinals. He served as the play-by-play announcer for the TV broadcast of the 2006 Cortaca Jug football game and announced several other SUNY Cortland sports on the Internet. Whenever possible, he still calls Bears contests during webcasts each season at Maxcy Hall.
Bronson began his sports information career at Hobart and William Smith Colleges as the assistant for award-winning athletic communications director Ken DeBolt. He spent two seasons in Geneva, helping to cover the field hockey team’s third national championship as well as the football and men’s basketball programs’ first NCAA Tournament appearances.
Bronson holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He has also earned a master’s degree in teaching from SUNY Potsdam and a master’s degree in sport management from SUNY Cortland.
