Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team suffered a 74-48 defeat at the hands of North Country rival St. Lawrence in non-conference action Wednesday night at Welsh Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Brittany Whitton (De Kalb, N.Y.) scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Bears (0-2), who shot just 31 percent and were outscored 32-18 in the paint and 29-16 off turnovers.
A jumper by senior guard
Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle, N.Y.), who finished with seven points and four steals in the game, with 8:41 to go in the first half gave Potsdam a 17-15 lead. However, the Saints (1-0) made a 15-4 run into the half and, following the 18:57 mark of the second, led by at least 10 for the remainder of the contest.
The Bears forced 25 turnovers but were unable to contain the strong high-low post attack and solid 3-point shooting (11-of-26) for St. Lawrence.
Freshman
Jessica Kouzan (Webster, N.Y.) recorded a team-high six rebounds (three offensive) for the Bears, while sophomore
Katy Briedis (Canton, N.Y.) and freshmen
Hannah Kmiecinski (Webster, N.Y.) and
Chenice Russell (Moira, N.Y.) combined for seven of the Bears' 15 steals.
Potsdam closes its three-game home stand Friday night against SUNY Canton. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Welsh Gymnasium.
