Roos top Bears on Senior Night


POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (19-5) pulled away late in three straight sets to down the SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (6-18) 3-0 on Wednesday night. The Bears wore pink jerseys for their annual Dig Pink game for breast cancer awareness. Before the match Potsdam seniors Gabby Arana (Williston Park, N.Y./Herricks), Sharon Ofori (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), Tia Wright (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and Liza Fields (Duanesburg, N.Y./Duanesburg) as well as graduate student Annie Smith (Chateauguay, N.Y./Chateauguay) were honored on Senior Night.
 
The Kangaroos downed the Bears 25-18, 25-22 and 25-18 for the victory. Fields led Potsdam offensively with eight kills and Smith totaled seven kills and also added eight digs. Wright and freshman setter Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) contributed 15 and 10 assists, respectively. Arana had a game high 23 digs, pushing her career total to 1,025.
 
Canton junior middle hitter Morgan Bills (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne Central) was a force with a contest-leading 14 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye) had 11 kills and nine digs, while senior outside hitter Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished with 10 kills and nine digs. Junior libero Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario/St. Stephens) had 14 digs and senior right side Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, N.Y./Belleville Henderson) added six kills and 12 digs. Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, N.Y./Caledonia Mumford) stole the show for Canton with 43 assists.
 
The Bears now prepare for their final weekend of SUNYAC Pool Play at SUNY Plattsburgh. Potsdam faces the host Cardinals at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Bears then take on Buffalo State at 10 a.m. on Saturday before battling Brockport at 3 p.m.
