POTSDAM, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (5-2) received two goals from freshman midfielder Chandler Short (San Diego, Calif./Westview) to down the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
The Saints kept most of the first half's action in Potsdam's end of the field and the Bears had trouble starting up their offense. Potsdam sophomore goalkeeper
Nick Davies (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) had a strong opening period with four saves, two of which prevented sure goals. However, St. Lawrence broke through in the 34th minute. Freshman midfielder Luis Jimenez (San Diego, Calif./San Pasqual) played the ball ahead to the left side of the box and Short ripped a shot past Davies. SLU remained in control for the remainder of the period and took the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Bears were able to create some offensive opportunities early in the final 45 minutes. Potsdam's best chance came off the foot of senior forward
Eduardo Figueroa (Rochester, N.Y./Dr. Freddie Thomas), but Saints sophomore goalie Sean Houston (Williamstown, Mass./Mt. Greylock) snatched the ball out of the air. After holding off the Bears' charge, Short struck again at the 56:52 mark. SLU junior midfielder Ryan Grant (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville) fired a shot from the right side of the box. Davies made a sprawling save, but Short was there to tap home the rebound. Potsdam threatened again with just under 12 minutes to go, turning three straight corner kicks into opportunities. However, the Saint goalie stood tall handling each ball that came his way and sealed the shutout.
Davies finished with seven saves in a strong effort, while Houston finished with five for his second win of the season.
St. Lawrence outshot the Bears 17-11 and edged them in corners 5-4.
Potsdam is back in action on Sunday afternoon when the Bears head across town to face Clarkson University at Hantz Field. The contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
