POTSDAM, N.Y.—Fredonia State (7-10, 4-7 SUNYAC) used a big second half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-16, 0-10) 76-46 on Bear Pride Night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Junior forward
Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) posted her second double-double of the season to lead the Bears with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Junior forward Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y./Newark) also recorded a double-double for the Blue Devils with 13 points and 16 boards, while sophomore guard Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) had a game-high 14 points.
The opening 13 minutes of the contest were tight with neither team leading by more than four points. A layup from LaVoie gave Potsdam its first lead of the game at 9-8 with 16:06 on the clock. A Cheatham 3-pointer put Fredonia up 13-9 just over two minutes later, but the Bears answered with a 7-2 run, including five points from sophomore forward
Patti Dorgler (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy). LaVoie sank another layup to give Potsdam its final lead at 16-15 with 9 minutes left in the half. The Blue Devils shifted their offense up a gear after the bucket and closed the opening period with a 17-5 run to take a 33-21 advantage into the break.
The locker room did nothing to cool off Fredonia. The Blue Devils outscored the Bears 21-7 over the first half of the final 20 minutes and led 54-28 with 10:19 to go. Senior captain
Colleen McNamara (Guelph, Ontario/Our Lady of Lourdes) created a mini-run with five straight points to whittle the lead back to 54-33 with 9:27 left. However, Fredonia slowly built its lead back up and extended it to close out the 76-46 victory.
Senior captain
Carli Reynolds (Indian Lake, N.Y./Indian Lake) scored 10 points for Potsdam and Dorgler matched a career-high with eight points. Sophomore guard Jamie Curry (Ransomville, N.Y./Wilson) was the third Blue Devil to reach double digits with 10 points.
The Bears host Buffalo State at 4 p.m. tomorrow to wrap up the weekend.
