POTSDAM, N.Y.—Erin O'Connor (Remsen, N.Y./Remsen) scored with 53 seconds left to lift SUNY Geneseo (11-4-1, 6-3 SUNYAC) to a 1-0 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (9-7-1, 2-6-1) on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Knights held a decisive advantage in time of possession in the first half, but both teams' defenses dictated play. The offenses were only able to manage seven shots in the opening half. Geneseo fired two shots on goal, but Potsdam senior goalie
Bri Thibeau (Salem, N.Y./Salem) kept the contest scoreless heading into the break.
The Bears battled evenly with the Blue Knights in the final 45 minutes. Potsdam outshot Geneseo 6-5. Thibeau and Blue Knights freshman goalie Emily Janiszewski (Buffalo, N.Y./Orchard) each stopped three more shots. The best chances of the contest came in the final five minutes. Thibeau handled an O'Connor attempt with 4:50 left. After a Bears corner kick, freshman forward
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) had a shot deflected from the top of the box. With a minute to go, O'Connor caught a long pass from junior midfielder Emily Green (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie), split two defenders and broke free for the decisive tally.
Thibeau finished with six saves and Janiszewski made three for the victory. Geneseo outshot Potsdam 11-7 on the afternoon, but the Bears finished with a 3-2 edge in corners.
