POTSDAM, N.Y.- On day 1 of the Skidmore Invitational, the SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (6-23) hit the court with host Skidmore College (9-22) Friday evening. The Bears jumped on top early taking the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-21. The Thoroughbreds came back to take the next three sets, 25-18, 26-24 and 15-10, to seal the 3-2 victory.
Sophomore utility
Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) led the attack for the Bears with 18 kills. Outside hitters, sophomore
Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and junior
Stephanie Maddox (Anaheim, Calif./Cornelia Connelly) each added 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Freshman setter
Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) compiled 46 assists with 18 digs. Junior libero
Maddie Paquin (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) was tough for the defense with 20 digs and three aces, while Topf added her own 20 digs. Maddox and junior defender
Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) each had 11 digs for Potsdam.
Caite Canfield led Skidmore with 21 kills and 19 digs. Clara Jones added 11 digs, while Ang McPartlin had 11. Bailey Hutchins tallied 33 assists with 15 digs. Marcela Familiar was solid for the defense with 31 digs.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow when they battle Hartwick at 11 a.m. and Union at 3 p.m. to close out the season.
