CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (5-5) built a 4-2 first quarter lead before succumbing to St. Lawrence University (8-5) 14-9 on Sunday afternoon. Freshman attackman
Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) led the Bears with three goals, while sophomore attackmen
Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and
Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) each scored twice. Tommy Hovey and Conor Healey both had three goals for the Saints.

Jon Woodworth (Great Bend, N.Y./Carthage) put Potsdam up 1-0 12:26 into the contest, but Healey answered for the Saints 40 seconds later. Soderquist and Stone followed with goals 24 seconds apart and the Bears led 3-1 at 8:26. Junior midfielder
Matt Kennedy (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) assisted on Stone's goal. SLU's Charlie Jennings scored at 1:48, but Moran closed the quarter with a goal and Potsdam led 4-2 after 15 minutes.
It was all Saints in the second quarter as they scored five unanswered to take a 7-4 lead. Five different SLU players found the back of the net, starting with Healey at 12:33. Hovey closed the scoring in the first half with the Saints' seventh goal at 1:36.
Hovey got his second and third in a row at 11:59 and 4:48 of the third to make it 9-4. Jennings got his second of the day 29 seconds later to get St. Lawrence into double digits. Junior attackman
Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) finally broke the Bears' drought on the man advantage with 1:37 left and Potsdam trailed 10-5 after 45 minutes.
Potsdam matched the Saints goal-for-goal in the final quarter, but couldn't pick up any ground. Cam Mullins scored for SLU at 9:42. Lindsey Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) then set up Stone for a man-down goal at 4:34 and Soderquist completed his hat trick with a man-up goal at 1:40. Jamie Denicola got SLU's final goal with 44 seconds left and Moran closed the scoring at 14-9, 27 seconds after that.

Pete Gropp (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) made 12 saves and St. Lawrence's Andrew Butturini matched him for the victory.
The Saints topped the Bears in shots (40-36), ground balls (32-20) and faceoffs (18-9). Potsdam was 2-for-6 on the man advantage and SLU was 1-for-3.
The Bears look to bounce back on Tuesday when they host Oswego State for a critical SUNYAC contest at 7 p.m.
