ONEONTA, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (6-8, 3-2 SUNYAC) raced out to sizable early lead and held off the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-9, 1-4) for a 14-8 victory on Tuesday afternoon. Junior attack
Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) led the Bears with two goals and two assists and senior attack
Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) had a goal and three assists. Sophomores
Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and
Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) each scored twice. Jillian Donodeo had four goals and an assist for the Red Dragons and Nikki Fioretti also finished with four goals.
Oneonta scored the first seven goals of the contest. Fioretti scored twice during the run. Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) set up Newman at 8:38 to get the Bears on the board. Weigel then found McClusky three minutes later to close the gap to five. Michelle Genovese scored two of the next three for the Red Dragons around a goal from sophomore attack
Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton). Oneonta took a 9-3 lead into the half. McClusky assisted on Cole's tally with 40 seconds left in the period.
Fiorretti got the first two goals of the final 30 minutes to increase the lead to eight with 17:45 left. Weigel connected with Newman again 16:26 and then scored her own goal to make it 11-5 at 12:11. The Red Dragons answered with three straight, two from Donodeo and one Jaime Morris for a nine-goal advantage. Potsdam struck three times in the final 2:28, but ran out of time. McClusky started the run and Lapinski scored the final two for the 14-8 final.
In goal, Bears sophomore
Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) recorded a season-high 17 saves in the contest. Rori Stark stopped just three shots for the Red Dragons.
Weigel totaled a game-high 11 draw controls on the afternoon.
The Bears are back in action this Saturday when they head to Geneseo for a 1 p.m. showdown with the 18th-ranked Blue Knights.
