Bears, Bengals, Roos go undefeated on Day 1 of VPI Invite

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (3-3) swept its matches with Utica College (1-6) and Regis College (3-4) on the first day of the Victory Promotions Invitational. The University of Maine-Fort Kent (9-2) downed Utica and Cégep André-Laurendeau (0-1), while SUNY Canton (7-0) handled Johnson State (1-4) and Regis.
 
In their opener, the Bears split the first two sets with the Pioneers by 26-24 and 22-25 scores before taking sets three and four 25-19 and 28-26, respectively. Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led Potsdam's offense with 14 kills. Junior outside hitter Stephanie Maddox (Anaheim, Calif./Cornelia Connelly) totaled 13 kills and sophomore utility player Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) added 11. Freshman setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) compiled a career-high 45 assists and four aces. Junior libero Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) finished with 25 digs, followed by 12 more from Rodda and 10 from Topf.
 
Pioneer middle hitter Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, N.Y./Whitesboro) had 11 kills. Senior setter Lora Allen (Dolgeville, N.Y./Dolgeville) posted 37 assists and senior defensive specialist Alexis Lyon (Prospect, N.Y./Holland Patent) chipped in 21 digs.
 
The Bears followed a similar path with the Pride in the second match, splitting the first two games and grinding out two close wins in the final two (25-23, 24-26, 25-23, 25-18). Maddox racked up another 16 kills for a game-high. Sophomore setter Kelsea Healis (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Cotate) had 13 and Topf added another 10. Rodda nearly matched her first contest total with 39 assists to go with 15 digs. Senior libero Allie Romaniello (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) totaled a contest-best 21 digs and Topf had 15.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Graciella Molinari (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) led Regis with 10 kills. Sophomore setter Crystina Lathrop (Houston, Texas/Jersey Village) posted 30 assists and sophomore outside hitter Nicole Connolly (San Mateo, Calif./Mercy-Burlingame) had 17 digs.
 
Junior outside hitter Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye) paced SUNY Canton's attack with 10 kills as the Roos hammered Johnson State 25-9, 25-10 and 25-16. Freshman setter Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, N.Y./Bloomfield) had 36 assists.
 
Canton made quick work of Regis as well with straight set victories of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-5. Cornish had eight more kills and Robinson added 26 more assists.
 
Maine-Fort Kent defeated Utica 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19) in its first contest. Junior outside hitter Brianna Krystek (Fairfield, Calif./Solano C.C.) had a game-high 13 kills for the Bengals and junior setter Selina Castro (Fairfield, Calif/Solano C.C.) posted 32 assists. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Voss (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) led Utica with 12 kills and Allen finished with 38 more assists.
 
Maine-Fort Kent closed the night with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 26-24) sweep of Cégep André-Laurendeau. Krystek had another 13 kills, while Castro added 22 assists and senior libero Tiara Nolen (Merced, Calif./Merced College) finished with 20 digs.
 
The Johnson State-Cégep match was pushed to Saturday.
 
The Bears open play tomorrow with an 11 a.m. showdown with the Bengals and then close the tournament with a 3 p.m. contest against Cégep.
