Volleyball struggles on final day at Canton Invite

CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team fell to the host Kangaroos, SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Poly by identical 3-0 scores on Day two of the SUNY Canton Invitational.
 
Canton downed the Bears by 25-10, 27-25 and 25-15 counts. Junior outside hitter Stephanie Maddox (Anaheim, Calif./Cornelia Connelly) had six kills. Freshman setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook N.Y./Sachem East) totaled 13 assists and 11 digs. Junior libero Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished with a game-high 12 digs.
 
The Cardinals narrowly escaped with 27-25 and 28-26 wins in the first two sets before clinching the win over Potsdam with a 25-12 victory in the third. Maddox and sophomore utility player Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) each has six kills and senior outside hitter Casey Chase (Central Square, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) added four more. Rodda posted 22 assists and 18 digs. Senior libero Allie Romaniello (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) contributed 17 digs and sophomore setter Kelsa Healis (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Cotate) finished with 11.
 
Potsdam closed the day with three final close losses to the Wildcats (20-15, 24-26, 23-25). Healis had seven kills, Rodda had a career-high 25 assists and added 14 more digs to her day's total. Romaniello led the team with 18 digs and Campbell tacked on 11 more.
 
The Bears are back in action on Friday afternoon when they host the Utica College Pioneers in the first round of the Victory Promotions Invitational at 4 p.m.
