Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Vander Esch leads Bears to sweep of Golden Flyers, 3-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Junior forward Dylan Vander Esch (San Jose, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack) had two goals and an assist to lead the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey (4-8-3) to a come-from-behind 3-2 win at Nazareth College (5-9-2) on Saturday afternoon. Senior assistant captain Vinny Caligiuri (Shoreham, N.Y./Hartford Wolfpack) also had a three-point day with a goal and two assists and junior goaltender Brendan McMenimen (Merrimac, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) stopped 31 shots for his 12th career win.

The Golden Flyers started even more quickly than they had the day before. Justin LaCorte put Nazareth up 1-0 just 44 seconds into the contest. Caligiuri tied the game at the 11:03 mark with assists from freshman forward Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) and Vander Esch. The Golden Flyers outshot Potsdam 12-11 in the first period, but the score remained tied.

Nazareth regained the lead on a goal from Dominik Gabaj at 9:44 of the second period. The Golden Flyers then clamped down defensively, allowing just six shots in the middle 20 minutes. They carried the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

The third period belonged to Vander Esch and the Bears. Potsdam's sniper scored twice in 3:26 to decide the contest. Vander Esch netted his first from Caligiuri at 3:18 and the game-winner from senior defenseman Jake Butler (Atlanta, Ga./Smith Falls Bears) and Caligiuri at 6:46. The Bears penalty-kill unit and goaltending were unbeatable in the final period. Potsdam killed off two five-on-three Nazareth power plays in the last 11 minutes and McMenimen slammed the door with 10 more saves.

Brandon Lane made 26 saves for the Golden Flyers. The Bears were 1-for-2 on the man advantage, while holding Nazareth scoreless in eight opportunities.

Potsdam is back in action on Friday, when the Bears head down Route 11 to begin a home-and-home series with SUNY Canton at the Roos House at 7 p.m.
