POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior captain
Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) and junior midfielder
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) each scored two goals as the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (9-2-2, 3-0-1 SUNYAC) defeated SUNY New Paltz (4-8-1, 0-4-1) 4-0 on Friday afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper
Delphine Léonard (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) needed just two saves for her second straight shutout.
After a few minutes of tentative play by both teams, the Bears took over. At 10:22, Morr broke free and fired a shot off Hawks senior goalie Katelyn Cordero (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern). She then picked up her own rebound, moved to her left and buried the ball for a 1-0 lead. In the 30th minute, Potsdam drove the ball down field. It went off the head of a New Paltz defender and fell to the feet of Falsion, who ripped a shot from the left side for a 2-0 lead. At the 38:12 mark, senior captain
Amanda Lingenfelter (Alexandria Bay, N.Y./Alexandria) sent a perfect pass through the Hawks defense to Falsion who beat Cordero a second time. Potsdam led 3-0 at the break.
The advantage allowed the Bears to get a lot of fresh legs in for the second half, but they maintained control of the contest. Despite New Paltz earning three corners in the final 45 minutes, the Hawks only tested Léonard one final time and the attempt was unsuccessful. With just 3:53 remaining, freshman midfielder
Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) unselfishly sent a cross across the box to Morr, who easily closed the scoring at 4-0.
Cordero allowed three goals and made four saves in the first half. Freshman Megan Tornatore (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) made three saves and allowed the final marker in the second half.
Potsdam outshot the Hawks 13-5 in the contest, but New Paltz finished with a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
With her four points, Falsion passes both Lacey Malbeuf '09 and Erin Blandin '04 for second place on the Bears all-time scoring list with 62 points on 27 goals and eight assists. Morr moves into 11th place with 37 points (18g, 1a). Morr's game-winning goal ties her with Malbeuf for first place on the program's list in that category with nine.
Potsdam hosts struggling, but dangerous SUNY Oneonta (1-9-1, 1-4) tomorrow at 1 p.m.
